This single-focal-length portrait lens has a beautiful shallow depth of field which allows for background blurring effects that are not possible with the 14-42mm kit zoom lens. The Movie-Still-Compatible (MSC) mechanism utilizes nearly "silent" focusing technology. It is great for tracking a moving child or pet, and provides a quick and silent focus mechanism for movies and still photography.

Introduced by Olympus around 2011 and still a great lens for the Micro Four Thirds system today. Sharp wide open with a pleasant bokeh. Tack sharp across the frame from f/4. Focusing is quick, accurate and silent. The best portrait (product, landscape) lens if you want to keep your kit as small and light as possible. It's a very unobtrusive lens too. It doesn't intimidate your subject.

I prefer the rendering of this lens over the Panasonic 42.5mm f/1.7. This tiny Olympus is very affordable, made of plastic and it has a somewhat odd shape.Don't let its price and looks fool you though, this is a very capable lens.
