After contacting my local camera store intending to buy the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro (which he had in stock) for my Nikon D50 I was advised to consider this newer addition designed for DSLRs. I was taken with it so paid the extra. I've only had it for a week but here are my initial impressions.
The build quality is sturdy yet lightweight. The switch to manual focus is simple like many of my nikkor lenses. The manual focusing is a tiny bit stiff and so there are tiny 'jumps' when fine focusing, but once started in a direction the travel is smooth. The auto-focus is fast and accurate at distance, albeit slightly noisy, but less effective at distances closer than 30cm, when it tends to hunt a little. Once latched on it is pin-sharp though. The lack of a focus limiter switch is noticable, though most macro work will be done with manual focus so the last few comments may be irrelevant.
The image quality is bitingly sharp with lovely blurring of background matter if a suitable aperture is selected. For portrait and general use the fast aperture setting of f/2 makes for great subject isolation and low light level shooting. In these circumstances the autofocus is excellent.
Overall? The image quality is what really counts. And here the 60mm really shines. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this macro lens to those looking for image perfection.
